The further request is now made to me to draw the attention of home industrial circles to the enterprise,
The English stores are against importing more German goods, the stock of them is coming to an end and will gradually be replaced by other manufacturers and after the war there will doubtless be very little inclination to take up relations with Germany again. The danger therefore arises, that the better German goods, such as the stores are given to importing and such as are bought by the westerners, the half-breeds and also by a large portion of the Chinese population of higher standing in the treaty ports, may disappear from the market.
In order to prevent this and rather to increase the sale of German products, the establishment of a German store is necessary, for such would not only send its orders practically exclusively to Germany but it would also in the natural course force English competitors to import German goods again if they do not wish to let themselves be pushed out by certain branches. The purchasing power of the Germans living in China and of the neutrals, who are in friendly intercourse with them and may be correspondingly influenced by them, ought to be strong enough to maintain a store, such as proposed.
It is however doubtful if the capital required can be got together here.
The home industries which will gain an advantage by supplying to China are therefore applied to with the request to support the undertaking financially.
